Samantha (Sam) Martins leaves her hometown for Crow’s Nest because she wants to be independent. She wants to stand on her own two feet, and she wants to mourn her broken heart away from the well-meaning but prying eyes of her family. She finds work as a waitress at a German tea house, and she’s doing all right. But then Kyle Docherty – the one who left without a word of explanation, who broke her heart – blows into town minus one arm and with instructions that he’s to act as her bodyguard at her brother’s behest. The need for some protection becomes clear when Sam finds herself embroiled in a potential crime involving illegal oleomargarine. Who is bringing the oleomargarine into the tea house? How is it getting into Crow’s Nest? Can Sam and Kyle identify the culprits before they’re taken out of the picture? And is there hope for their relationship?
I loved this book! I haven’t read any of the related books, but I got enough information on the characters from this story to follow along. (Bonus: I now want to add all the other books to my TBR.) This is also the first of Danielle Grandinetti’s books I’ve read, and again, I’d like more, please.
Sam is a delightfully headstrong young woman – a little hard-headed at times, but I can relate to that. When her sweetheart Kyle leaves town without a word, she doesn’t crumple into a heap. She picks herself up, moves, and finds a job. And Kyle. Bless his heart, y’all (in the nice way, not the sarcastic way). He realizes he did Sam wrong. He wants to atone for what he’s done. But can he convince her that she’s not just a job for him, that his feelings for her are still true and strong?
And I didn’t even know there was an oleomargarine scandal in the dairy industry in the 1930s! This is why I so enjoy historical fiction. I get to learn about things I’ve never heard of. For the record, I would have sided with the dairy farmers. My daddy always said that if God meant for him to eat margarine, then He would have made margarine come from a cow, and I concur. Butter all the way.
The mystery is engaging, the action keeps the pages turning, and the romance is swoony without being spicy. It’s got everything I like and nothing I don’t, and I give Ms. Grandinetti five stars and my future readership, because I have to get to know all her characters now!
