If this is God’s plan, Annaliese is disappointed. It’s nothing like she imagined, and her heart’s desire is to go to veterinary college. This could mean a very different future for her.

Jacob and Julia and their two children, Justin and Annaliese, are building a life for themselves in the American West. It’s hard work, but they’re creating a home there. When Julia’s old friend, Edward, comes from England with his wife and son to visit, Julia worries whether they’ll find issue with the life she now leads. The visit goes well, though, with plans for future travel for the families. Annaliese and Robbie don’t part on the best of terms, though – sparks fly as they only can between boys and girls when they don’t quite know what think about each other!

This is the third in Linda Hoover’s Heart’s Desire series. I haven’t read the first two, but now I want to go back and get the whole story! Here the focus is primarily on Annaliese and Robbie. When things take a potentially romantic turn, Robbie expresses his rather old-fashioned ideas about a woman’s place, and those ideas conflict with Annaliese’s plans for her life. She challenges Robbie to use Scripture to back up his views, and that doesn’t turn out quite like Robbie planned.

The characters here are warm and wonderfully drawn. Annaliese is, of course, my favorite, but it’s a delight seeing them all grow up and grown in faith. Faith is gently woven throughout the story, a vital part of the characters’ lives rather than something tacked on as an afterthought, and the characters actively consider what purpose and plan God may have for them.

Recommended for anyone who enjoys a character-driven story that feels like you’re waving goodbye to friends when you turn the final page!

Linda Hoover lives in west central Ohio with her husband and grandson. She earned a degree in psychology from Anderson University where she learned the voices in her head were actually characters from stories waiting to be told.

Linda has been writing since childhood, but her publishing career started with writing columns and a middle grade serial for the South Charleston Spectator. A retired librarian, she now enjoys being a fulltime author in her home office.
