The downside to having a twin is if that twin does some really bad things and you take the heat. That’s the story of Parker’s life. His twin brother Lucas gets up to some criminally sketchy stuff, take the money and run things, and the people Lucas leaves behind sometimes mistake Parker for Lucas. It all gets sorted out, eventually, but Parker is weary of it. He feels like Vargas Ranch might be the place where he can finally belong, build a future, break free of his brother.
Until Shannon shows up. Lucas did her dirty when she was in college, and when she sees Parker, she sees red. It isn’t until after she has him hauled off in handcuffs that she learns she picked the wrong man. Can she ever make up for a horrible, horrible mistake that might cost Parker his job and his security?
Her Mistaken Identity Cowboy is the first in Karen Baney’s Love at Vargas Ranch series. I loved getting to see the characters from the Vargas Ranch books again, and I loved getting to know Shannon and Parker.
Karen Baney paints a wonderful portrait of two characters trying to break free from her past. Parker has taken the hits of being misidentified as his brother with more good grace than anyone could expect, and he would still like to see his brother redeemed. Shannon was deeply wounded by Lucas, and she turned her pain into a career helping others.
It was interesting to see the difference in how Parker saw his brother and how his mother did. What Parker thought was his mother’s first time meeting Shannon also offered some unexpected surprises, as his mother already knew Shannon and saw her very differently than Parker did. The story makes an excellent point about what happens when we assume and giving people a chance to prove themselves before you go off on them.
Enemies to friends (or more) is one of my favorite tropes, and Baney uses it delightfully here. Parker and Shannon find themselves put together to work on the gala Shannon is planning for the ranch’s new equine therapy center, and that gives Parker the chance to show Shannon he isn’t his brother.
Lucas gets his shot at redemption, too, but I won’t tell you what happens. Read it for yourself and find out!
The lovely Vargas Ranch setting, characters I loved and was cheering for, horses, a charity gala, enemies to friends and more, sweet kisses, I enjoyed everything about Her Mistaken Identity Cowboy. If Karen Baney writes it, I’m reading it. Her books are like a cozy, comfy blanket, and I will gladly read them all.
