Book Beginnings on Friday and Book Blogger Hop: December 8, 2023

Book Beginnings on Fridays is hosted each week by Rose City Reader. It’s a chance to share the first sentence or so of the book you are reading this week. You can check out others’ book beginnings here. I’m also going to link up with Carrie at Reading Is My Superpower for First Line Friday.

This week’s book beginning:

Synopsis:

In 2183, Jerome Conquergood is at the lowest point of his life, homeless and a strayer, an outcast of the crumbling Old York City, post-apocalyptia. Despite his hatred for the Korporation, Conquergood is compelled to save his mysterious brother Vincent by joining the sole remaining mega-corporate and authoritarian governmental entity in a world oppressed to peace. For the Korporation, the world is a well-crafted utopia.

VII
“Passenger Pigeons”

Conquergood was born in the year – but he does not remember the year of his birth – but he does remember that twelve years ago in the year 2171, at the age of five or six or seven, he awoke to the City of Old York, of no family, good nor ill nor otherwise.

And in case we get it rolling again until Freda returns to take up the mantle, I’ll share a Friday 56, too.

Conquergood becomes aware of two distinct faktions of his memory: one is of the strayers, Ritz and the Lighthouse squad, in the abandoned city of grime and waste once called Manhattan; the other is of Vincent always in the countryside or on the beach, reflective and perfect.

How can both sets of memories be true?

This is a chewy dystopian sci-fi read set in the somewhat far future. In trying to assimilate into the Korporation and learn its ways, Jerome Conquergood begins learning who he really is. I’m enjoying it so far. Does this sound like something you’d read?

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. It starts each Friday and runs through the following Thursday. Each week, there’s a new prompt featuring a book-related question. It’s designed to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, make new blogging friends, and gain followers. See what others have to say on this topic and link up your own post here.

Where do you like to read the most?
(submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

I CAN read pretty much anywhere! Favorite places to read, though, would be in bed and in the car. When we go somewhere, my husband usually drives. That frees me up to read!

What about you? Do you have a favorite place to read? Leave a comment, and go visit other bloggers at the Hop!
