Book Beginnings on Fridays is hosted each week by Rose City Reader. It’s a chance to share the first sentence or so of the book you are reading this week. You can check out others’ book beginnings here. I’m also going to link up with Carrie at Reading Is My Superpower for First Line Friday. And I’ll be sharing for Friday 56 with Anne at Head Full of Books! She’s keeping the meme alive – y’all hop over to her blog and join in the fun!

This week’s book beginning:

Synopsis:
Still reeling from the dangers of a recent case, forensic genealogist RaeJean Hunter takes on a supposedly routine case to locate the missing heir of a woman she met in Central Park a year ago. Tantalized by a hefty income, she accepts.
But there’s a catch–she must find the heir within six months or the forty-million-dollar estate is donated to a local university.
With the tight deadline comes the chance of a sizeable bonus, a series of unforeseen obstacles, and the unexpected connection to a cold case from 1910, when perfume heiress Dorothy Arnold disappeared without a trace.
Armed with only her genealogical skills, the books and historical documents she unearths, and an antique doll that seems to be guiding her toward the answers she needs, RaeJean faces dangerous events that threaten to shatter her world and challenge her to meet the deadline. Her travels throughout the United States and New Zealand in search of answers bring with it its own Will she find the heir before time runs out?
But someone doesn’t want her to solve the case. The clock is ticking, and it will take every ounce of grit RaeJean has to solve this mystery and outwit the dangers that threaten her present while she sifts through the past.
Our Keurig had just finished spitting out my second cup of coffee when my phone vibrated on the counter next to me. The display showed a New York area code in an exchange matching those at Murbeck, a huge law firm that handled New York’s elite clients.

“First, you have to understand the majority of the children housed here in the 1930s were not orphans, but children from families with difficulties.”
Are you intrigued? I loved the first book in the series, The Desk from Hoboken, and so far I’m enjoying this one, too. Review to come in a week or so.

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. It starts each Friday and runs through the following Thursday. Each week, there’s a new prompt featuring a book-related question. It’s designed to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, make new blogging friends, and gain followers. See what others have to say on this topic and link up your own post here.

I enjoy baking, and you can eat a good snack while you read a book. Does that count?

I will need to tell my daughter, a Genetics Counselor about this book. She loves Mysteries why not read one about her craft? Thank you.
How about a little fun with our 2024 end of year book lists? Join me for the My Year in Reading , which is little like Mad Libs but with book titles. Check it out: My Year in Reading
Oooh, that sounds like fun!
That sounds like a fascinating line of work!
That’s a great book cover!
And I love to bake, too. I hope to blog more about baking this year.
That’s a good idea! I could throw in some baking tidbits here on the blog, too.
I’ve not heard of this series, but it sounds really interesting. My library has the first one, so it is now on my saved list. I also love to bake, and I do like to eat what I baked while reading or listening to audiobooks. In fact, I listen to audiobooks while I’m baking.
I wish I could listen to audiobooks. That would let me get more of my TBR list finished! But I just don’t like having headphones in my ears while there are things going on around me. And I’m seldom in the car long enough to make it worth my time to listen to audiobooks there.
Like Deb, I think that’s a great cover and I like the sound of the book. Forensic genealogy would be such an interesting field to be in! Snacking and reading do go well together. 🙂 I hope you have a great weekend!
Sounds like an interesting book.
I used to do some baking. I don’t have time any more. I was never overly good 😂
Have a great week!

I’m definitely intrigued! This sounds really good! Hope you have a great week! 🙂
Baking counts! I enjoy baking and drinking herbal tea, both also pair well with reading when I plan ahead to do them. It’s been less often lately since I’ve done either, but a nice warm cup of tea and a delicious treat paired with a good book sound pretty nice about now!
I’ll count it, then! And lately I’ve decided I like hot tea more than I used to. Now I just need to bake something!
