Book Beginnings on Friday and Book Blogger Hop – July 15, 2022

It’s FRIDAY!!! Welcome to this week’s edition of the hijinks!

Book Beginnings on Fridays is hosted each week by Rose City Reader. It’s a chance to share the first sentence or so of the book you are reading this week. You can check out others’ book beginnings here.

This week’s book beginning:

Juliana did not remember the curse being cast. She was there, of course, a small child of only one. Too young to have any memory of it.

Katherine Macdonald gives us splendid retellings of myth and of fairy tale. I anticipate this, her gender-swapped vision of Sleeping Beauty, will be equally compelling. So far, I’m positively engrossed by the story of Prince Hawthorn and his reluctant bodyguard, Juliana Ardencourt. I love the names Macdonald has chosen for her characters. I love the interaction between the two of them, the push and pull of attraction against the backdrop of the curse everybody knows is coming.

Would you read this book? Be warned, once you read one of Katherine Macdonald’s books, you’ll want more! (Not that this is a bad thing….)

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. It starts each Friday and runs through the following Thursday. Each week, there’s a new prompt featuring a book-related question. It’s designed to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, make new blogging friends, and gain followers. See what others have to say on this topic and link up your own post here.

This week’s prompt:

I’m not big on audiobooks. When my commute was longer, I used to listen to them. Now, if traffic is kind, I’m not in the car long enough to get much listening done. I don’t listen to them when I’m at work or doing things around the house because I don’t like wearing headphones in those settings. (And if I listened to audiobooks at work, I’d probably find myself in trouble!)

What about you? Are audiobooks your jam?

I love to listen to audiobooks. I don’t wear headphones as the books go straight to my hearing aids.

I’m a big fan of fairy tale adaptations, so I’ll have to look into this one, especially because of the push and pull you mention! I do also like the opening, it drops you right in there. And I’m currently pretty into audiobooks but I do also struggle finding time for them in which I’m not immediately distracted. I hope you enjoy this one and have a lovely weekend 🙂

    • Maybe a lack of concentration is at the root of my dislike for them, too. If things are going on around me, I can’t put on headphones and lose myself in the audiobook. But I can read with all the racket in the world happening – go figure!

      Happy weekend to you, too!

  3. Audiobooks are my favorite way to consume books. I listen to about 40 per year. Anne’s book quotes

  4. I never read this author but the book does sound like a good one.

  5. This sounds really good! I never seem to tire of fairy tale retellings.

  6. Rachel says:

The Forest of Dreams and Whispers seems pretty interesting!

  7. Ashley S. says:

I’m always on the lookout for new fairytale retellings, and this one sounds so good! I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing! Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂

  8. I’ve recently begun listening to a lot more audiobooks. I typically listen to them while doing chores or driving so that I can get some reading in during times it wouldn’t otherwise be possible. I’ve also found that I just really enjoy hearing the narrator give life to the characters, as long as the narrator is engaging.

  9. I am going to have to check out that book! I have never listened to an audiobook and I have no plans to. I prefer to read a physical book or on my kindle.
