Cookbook: Frightfully Fun Halloween Recipes (2000 ed.)

My Vintage Cookbook Mystery series always includes recipes that I’ve adapted from my own persona collection of vintage cookbooks.

Cookbooks dedicated to a specific holiday didn’t really take off until the 1990s. This collection from Favorite Brand Name Recipes came out in 2000. It’s the kind of paperback booklet you’d find on a supermarket endcap or the checkout stand.

Jack-O’-Lantern Cheese Ball

Ingredients:

2 cups (8 oz.) shredded Cheddar cheese, mild or sharp

½ package cream cheese, softened

¼ cup solid pack pumpkin

¼ cup pineapple preserves (if these aren’t available, use apricot preserves)

¼ tsp. ground allspice

¼ tsp. ground nutmeg

1 pretzel rod, broken in half

1 slice pumpernickel or dark rye bread

Black olive slices

Assorted crackers

Directions:

Beat shredded cheese, cream cheese, pumpkin, pineapple preserves, and spices in a medium-size bowl until as smooth as possible. Cover and refrigerate for two to three hours, or until the cheese is firm enough to shape into a ball.

Shape the cheese mixture into a round pumpkin. Place it on a serving platter. Use a knife to score evenly placed vertical lines on the cheese ball to make it resemble a pumpkin.

Place the half-pretzel rod into the top of the ball so that it resembles a pumpkin steam. Cut two small triangles from the bread slice and place them on the pumpkin to create eyes. Cut the olive slices in half and place them on the pumpkin in a small line to create a smile.

Cover and chill until serving time. Serve with the crackers.

Servings: a lot – it’s a spread.
