REVIEW
When Therese Palmer is contacted by a colleague to rescue his young daughter from Russian organized crime, she doesn’t hesitate. Her colleague insists that no law enforcement be involved, but Therese recruits Texas Ranger Blane Gardner as her partner. Her skills are in wilderness survival, his are in tracking and capturing criminals. They must use every bit of their expertise to try to save Alina from the depths of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and they put themselves in harm’s way plenty of times to do it.
Therese and Blane have a history. They’d dated a few times before Therese called things off because he didn’t share her faith in God, for reasons he wasn’t willing to disclose. And Therese, while pretty strong in her faith, has her own baggage to deal with. The attraction is strong between them, but neither is willing to push it
They reveal their back stories a little at a time during tense situations to help keep their minds off the overwhelming odds they face. And slowly, they both lay their burdens down at Jesus’ feet – Blane coming to faith, Therese realizing she’s carried a load of guilt that was never hers to bear.
The bad guys here were very, very bad, and it was hard to pinpoint where loyalties really lay. Who was on the side of right, and who was on the side of wrong? There were plenty of tense moments when I wasn’t sure how Therese, or Blane, or both, would get out of the jam in which they found themselves.
At times the book felt almost like it had too much information, and sometimes it took me a moment to sort out all the moving parts. Still (spoiler), there is a ray of sunshine at the end of the battle for Therese and Blane, and it was a very satisfactory ending to an enjoyable book.
