Finding love at Death’s Door might destroy them both.

CHICAGO, Ill., 1931—Gabriella Salatino, an illustrative journalist for the Di Stasio Giornaliste Agency, never planned to return to her island home at the tip of Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula. Nor did she plan to witness a murder. But when her life is threatened, she has no choice but to hide out under the protective care of the man she left behind.

Deputy Andri Jóhannsson has been coming to Gabby’s rescue his entire life, but having her in his secluded home tests the limits of his patience. The woman has no sense of self-preservation, and he has a smuggling ring to ferret out. Except, her skill with sketchpad and pencils might be the very investigative tool he needs in order to catch the bootleggers.

With a murderer on her trail and criminals evading detection, Gabriella and Andri must set aside the past or risk its eruption. Because this time, the collateral damage might include more than losing their friendship. It might cost them the lives of those they love.

La Verità con Integrità. Truth with Integrity. The Legacy of a (Girl) Stunt Reporter.

More in this Series

I loved His Boss’s Little Sister by Danielle Grandinetti. So I was very excited to read Eyewitness Sketch, the first in her Di Stasio Giornaliste Agency series.

Gabriella Salatino, or Gabby as she’s known to those close to her, is an illustrative journalist. I was fascinated by that! It wasn’t something I had ever thought of, but before the use of cameras was widespread, illustrative journalists gave readers visuals. (This is one of the best things about historical fiction – learning new stuff!). She never intended to return home again, and she certainly never meant to bring danger to the doorstep of Heima Island. But she’s seen something she shouldn’t, and home is the only place she has to turn.

Danielle Grandinetti writes wonderfully stubborn heroines! Gabby may have moments where her words don’t quite come out right (I can relate). But she isn’t going to turn away from the chance to right a wrong, even when she’s at risk. And Andri Jóhannsson, a friend who could be more, isn’t going to let her face trouble alone.

I love a good second chance romance, and Andri and Gabby are simply delightful. You can’t help but want to see them solve the mystery and have their happily ever after, because they’re both such kind people who want to see right prevail.

I also appreciate the fact that the Di Stasio agency is run by a woman who employs only women. That was pretty forward-thinking for the time period, when career options for women were much more limited than they are now. I also thought it was interesting that the agency provided living space for its female journalists. I can imagine what a boon that would have been for a young, single woman!

This book took me to Door County, Wisconsin, an area of the country I’m not terribly familiar with. I loved learning more about it and immersing myself in the culture of the 1930s. I’m not a real formal person myself, and there are things about that era we wouldn’t want to return to, but it was enjoyable to read about a time when people wanted to put their best foot forward in public. I’ll never be one of those people funding charity events, but I like reading about them!

I’ll be jumping right into this series now. Danielle Grandinetti, please keep writing. Your stories are fantastic, and this one is a five-star read! If you love learning about different periods in history, clean romance, and plenty of suspense to keep pages turning, pick up Eyewitness Sketch.
