As I am prone to do, I jumped into the middle of this series! Frittered Moments reads fine as a standalone, although I now want to go back and read the previous four books.

Deputy US Marshal Perry Cole is in St. Claire, on the trail of a dangerous and elusive criminal, and the FBI is on the hunt with him. Perry finds himself working with newly appointed Deputy Sheriff Erin Kaminski when his case intersects with a murder in St. Claire. They track down lead after lead, but never seem to make any headway. In fact, it seems almost like someone is working against them. Can they solve the crime before they end up in a killer’s crosshairs?

This was a good read, y’all! Both Perry and Erin are solid, likable characters. They’re doing a tough job to the best of their abilities, even when doing that job well puts them at odds with people they know and care about. And I’d think doing that difficult job when also trying to deal with the feelings your coworker brings out in you is even harder.

Erin’s faith is pretty strong. She believes God has brought her to St. Claire for a reason, that it’s where she belongs, and she isn’t shy about discussing what she believes. Perry struggles to understand her belief, but it makes such an impact on him that he turns to God in prayer when the situation is dire. Faith is an integral part of the story, not in a Bible-thumping way, but in a conversational way.

The suspense is top-notch. There were plenty of moments that had me on the edge of my seat, and a couple that had my jaw dropping in surprise. Ms. Pearl kept me guessing as to who the bad guy was, too.

If you’re looking for a read with clean romance, a realistic depiction of faith in action, and a puzzler of a whodunit, pick up Frittered Moments. Oh, just go ahead and pick up the whole series. Don’t do like me and start in the middle!
