Nobody writes romantic suspense like DiAnn Mills, and she gives us another winner with Lethal Standoff!
Hostage negotiator Carrington Reed is very, very good at what she does. So good that when two brothers are holed up with a houseful of undocumented immigrants and things are threatening to go terribly wrong, the Border Patrol calls her. Levi Ehrlich is sent out by his boss to get a story that will sell papers. But Levi would rather get an exclusive from the elusive Carrington, and his ethics won’t let him write a shoddy piece for the shock value just to keep his bosses happy.
When one of the brothers kills himself, the standoff ends, but the mystery doesn’t. Carrington and Levi are drawn by their innate sense of justice to help the widow and children of Will Kendrix find closure. This means digging into the death of Will’s father Timothy, a man who was well thought of in the community but gave a lot of folks reason to cheer his untimely demise.
Just when you think the stakes can’t get any higher, DiAnn Mills ratchets it up a notch. Carrington has a high-stress job, and she battles her own nightmares in the form of guilt over her parents’ death and fear of a cancer diagnosis. Levi was deemed dead to his family when he converted to Messianic Judaism, and he has no idea if he’ll ever speak to them again. And that’s just their personal lives! Carrington and Levi risk life and limb to get answers, even when law enforcement and an unidentified person on a burner phone warn them away from the Kendrix family.
And this isn’t just a fun suspense read. Mills weaves Christian faith beautifully into the story. Levi is a Christ follower, and it was interesting learning about the Messianic Jewish faith. Carrington thinks that if God is there at all, He can’t possibly be interested in her. Yet when trouble strikes, she finds herself with no choice but to pray. Both characters wrestle with the impacts, positive and negative, that their faith choices have had on their lives and what those choices might mean for their possible future together.
Romance isn’t the entire story, but there’s chemistry between Carrington and Levi. I was cheering for them and sometimes wanting to shake Carrington for letting her fear of what might or might not be push her away from what could pretty definitely be with Levi. Do they get a happy ending? Read the book and find out! But don’t come crying to me if you’re up all night reading. Once you start, you may not be able to put Lethal Standoff down.
