I’m a fan of sci-fi, and time travel is one of my favorite sci-fi tropes. And for it to be in a book with a Christian focus? Winner! And that’s what D. K. Till gives us with Midnight Rider.
Thea and Giles are going on an adventure – to the future! Coltrane McMurray has invented a time machine, and they’re on its maiden voyage to the year 2123. Thea, a journalist, plans to do a write-up on the experience. She and Giles are both a bit nervous, though. Turns out 2123 is rather different from their modern-day experience, and a murder keeping them there longer than their planned stay is unsettling. But once they’re back home to their own time, Thea feels compelled to travel back to the future to solve the crime.
This story just blew me away with how engrossing and entertaining it was. I mean, leaving your home to solve a crime 100 years in the future? That’s dedication. And Giles wouldn’t let Thea go alone. That’s love.
There’s another mystery Thea wants to solve, too. On their first trip to the future, she saw a woman and a little girl who looked an awful lot like her. Are they her descendants? Related some other way? Just doppelgangers like everyone supposedly has?
One thing that made me, as an English teacher and word nerd, absolutely bonkers was the oddly shortened speech patterns Till envisioned in 2123. If I had to listen to people talk like that regularly, I might want to poke a stick in my ear. I teach high school English, and the way some of my students talk, I’m not sure our language won’t end up somewhere close to Till’s imagining! It didn’t at all spoil my enjoyment of the book, though. The speech patterns were just part of her vision of the future.
Everything doesn’t go according to plan for Thea and Giles, but they have their faith to strengthen them. Till weaves that into the story as naturally as breathing, so it doesn’t feel forced or like she’s beating you over the head with a Bible. I like stories where the faith aspect just flows along with the storyline, rather than standing out like it was wedged in at the last minute.
And as a child who grew up in the 70s with older cousins who shared their music with me, I appreciate that the titles of Till’s books are classic rock songs. That was a happy surprise!
This is the second book in the series. I haven’t read the first one – yet. I was able to follow this story just fine, but I’m going to get my hands on the first book as soon as I can, and I hope to read more of D. K. Till’s books in the future.

Throughout her childhood and teens, she either had her nose in a book or was attempting to write one.
But life got in the way, marriage and children set her dreams aside for higher purposes. Today, with children grown and enjoying retirement, she’s reopened that dream package and is now living the life she had only imagined.
The author is a huge fan of the Back to the Future trilogy, inspiring her to write time travel, too. Thus the Time Passengers series was born, perfect for fans of Back to the Future and The Terminator. A classic rock lover, she names her titles after hit rock songs of the 60s and 70s – Starry Starry Night, Midnight Rider, and Nights in White Satin.
