Synopsis:
She played to escape. Now the game is humanity’s last hope.
Calena has spent twenty years underground, haunted by the alien attack that killed her mother and shattered the world above. Her only solace is Rhythm Sword, a virtual reality game where she loses herself in music, movement, and light. Inside the game, she feels alive.
But when scientists discover that Rhythm Sword’s neural tech can sync human reflexes with real combat systems, Calena’s virtual skill becomes something far more dangerous. Drafted into an elite strike team of gamers-turned-soldiers, she must face the very monsters that drove her into hiding.
To save Earth, Calena has to do more than follow the beat—she must rise above her fear, rediscover her strength, and learn to trust the people fighting beside her. Because this time, the rhythm isn’t just in her headset—it’s the heartbeat of humanity’s last stand.

I do love a good book surprise, so when I had the chance to take part in a Blind Date with a Book, I enthusiastically said yes. My book was Rhythm Sword Warriors by Lara J. Nance.
The story is set in a future apocalyptic world. Aliens – Metavalents to the official-type people, Globs to the everyday folks – have invaded Earth, and mankind has been driven underground. Humans are resilient, though, and they find ways to survive. Calena, our FMC, has struggled since her parents were killed by the aliens. She’s found a community in Pavilion and a dear friend in Katsu, but the thing she looks forward to most is Rhythm Sword. The virtual reality game has been cobbled together from scavenged tech, and it gives Calena an outlet to slash and slice and destroy blocks to music.
When scientists find a way to destroy the Globs, they have to figure out how to deploy that method successfully. They discover a built-in population trained in the very skills needed in the Rhythm Sword players. Calena, with her high skill level at the game, is a natural to be tapped as a leader. But can she get past her fears and her mental struggles to be the leader the newly fledged warriors need? And can they fight and wipe out this menace and save humanity?
Saving humanity, that’s some pretty high stakes! This book calls to mind other stories like Ender’s Game and Armada where alien warfare is gamified. Here, though, Calena knows she’s being called into service to kill the aliens. At first, she’s not sure she can get past her ingrained fear of the creatures. But she manages to channel her anger into the fight, and she and the other warriors become a force to be reckoned with.
There’s a consistent thread of tension throughout the story. When they think they have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the Globs, the aliens’ behavior changes, and there’s a new challenge to overcome. There is emotional turmoil when people aren’t sure whether those dear to them have survived a battle (or when they learn for sure that those loved ones haven’t survived). But people also still hang on to hope and love and caring and concern for each other.
The story deals pretty starkly with mental health. Calena isn’t an untouchable heroine. She’s tried to take her own life, she wrestles with ongoing inner darkness, and at Katsu’s urging, Calena tries mushrooms to see if they can help her. I don’t know that I’d go the psychedelic route myself, but given that they’re in an apocalyptic situation and there’s not exactly a way to see a medical professional for medication and treatment, I can’t fault that decision.
There’s room for romance even in the midst of the potential end of humanity, and Calena and Blake, the scientist looking for ever more effective ways to take down the alien menace, fall in love with each other. There’s a little more on-page spice than I prefer in my books, but again, if it’s an end-of-the-world situation, who’s to say we wouldn’t all find some solace in physical closeness?
Overall, I found this to be a good story with characters I could cheer for, and I stayed up way past my bedtime reading. I hope Lara J. Nance has more stories to come in Calena’s world!

Thanks so much for reading and enjoying my book. I’m glad you found it engaging.
Will there be more in that story yet to come? And thank you for stopping by my blog!
I haven’t decided yet. There are certainly some things that could be expanded as they rebuild their world as well as the relationships that developed in this story. There could even be a return of some surviving aliens…. LOL You never know! Thanks again! Lara
