About the Book

Title: Texas Reclaimed
Series: Lone Star Redemption #3
Author: Sherry Shindelar
Publisher: Wild Heart Books
Release Date: February 3, 2026
Genre: Christian Historical Romance
Can love blossom between a woman haunted by her family’s past and a man haunted by the trauma of war?
Cora Scott is determined to hold onto her family’s Texas ranch and provide a stable home for her young half-brother, Charlie, despite the mounting challenges of post-Civil War frontier life. But when a scheming creditor threatens to seize their land, she must accept help from Ben McKenzie, a former Yankee soldier sent by her late brother. Though Ben’s generosity and strength draw her, the man’s private struggle she stumbles upon—too reminiscent of her father’s alcoholism—makes her question whether she can trust her heart to him.
Ben McKenzie arrives in Texas intent on fulfilling his promise to his dying friend to protect Cora and Charlie. While using his inheritance to save their ranch, he battles not only the loss of their cattle but also his dependency on laudanum—a medicine that turned into a curse after his imprisonment at Andersonville. As his feelings for Cora deepen, he must choose between his promise to his father to take over their Philadelphia newspaper and his growing dream of a life with Cora in Texas.
When a Comanche warrior begins courting Cora and Ben’s responsibilities in Philadelphia threaten to tear them apart, they must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome their fears and forge a future together on the Texas frontier.

Ben McKenzie survives incarceration at Andersonville, and his return home should have been cause for celebration. But the ordeal left him addicted to laudanum, and he’s struggling to break free. And he’s not breaking his betrothal, but he’s putting off announcing it. He’s compelled by a sense of duty to his friend, Jeb Scott, to go from Philadelphia to Texas to check on the welfare of Jeb’s sister, Cora.
After her father succumbed to the ravages of alcoholism, Cora Scott is alone with her half-brother, Charlie, trying to hold onto the family ranch. When she learns her father put the ranch up as stakes for a gambling debt, Cora fears she’ll lose everything. Ben McKenzie’s arrival seems like a godsend. But can Cora trust that addiction won’t overwhelm Ben like it did her father?
I love love love Sherry Shindelar’s books! This is the third in the Lone Star Redemption series, and it’s so very good. Cora and Ben both wrestle with not letting their past wreck a possible future between them. Both are determined to save the ranch and do right by Charlie. They’re stubborn, but not unreasonable.
Shindelar deals with addiction realistically. Ben is drawn to laudanum, and it’s a real battle for him not to give in to its promise of relief from pain and stress. Cora wants to believe the best of Ben, wants to trust that he’s strong enough to stay clean. But the “what ifs” try to creep in, and when Ben has to return to Pennsylvania for family matters, they part on a painful note.
Characters from other books in the series make an appearance here. I just love the interactions between Little Star (Sky and Garret’s daughter from Texas Forsaken) and Charlie! I’d love to read their story down the road.
The historical details are engaging, and the growing romance between Ben and Cora is clean, no more than kisses, but oh, those kisses! Faith is woven gently throughout as each of them wrestle with what the Lord may have planned and rely on Him for guidance. And the tension that swirls around both the survival of the ranch and the future for Cora and Ben is compelling.
Highly recommended for anyone who likes good historical fiction, characters who trust in God, and romance that’s got a little sweet heat but isn’t spicy. Sherry Shindelar is now one of my favorite authors! Five stars for Texas Reclaimed.
