New York Times bestselling author Dr. David Jeremiah’s theological insights are already valued by millions of readers. Now he brings that same depth to novels that explore the end of the world…
As leader of a special military unit charged with stopping potential pandemics before they spread, John “Haggs” Haggerty has a front-row seat to the sharp increase in natural disasters that precede the Rapture–including plagues, earthquakes, famines, wars, and rumors of war. And each crisis is becoming more intense.
Meanwhile, his own world feels like it’s falling apart. He’s still caught in the grief of messing up his relationship with his ex-wife, and he’s trying to keep it together so that he can show up for his adult daughter before she wants him out of her life entirely. As both personal and professional situations push him to the brink, Haggs finds himself stretched further than ever in his desire to be the kind of good person he knows he should be.
Just when it seems as if things might turn around, Haggs is forced to decide between his need to find solutions and his need for personal redemption.
Vanished is Left Behind for a new generation–apocalyptic action and emotion that’s infused with Dr. Jeremiah’s perspective and compassion.

Vanished is a vivid imagining of what it might look like when the Rapture described in the Bible actually happens. Dr. David Jeremiah is a well-respected Christian author, and this is his first venture into fiction.
John “Haggs” Haggerty is part of one of several military task forces trying to get a handle on unprecedented world events – disease, famine, natural disasters. He and his fellow soldier and friend, Caleb Johnson, go where they’re sent and do their best to work with other countries to contain illness before it can break out and decimate the population. The world has already survived COVID-19 and a host of other pandemics, and it looks like they won’t stop coming anytime soon.
Haggs is also dealing with turmoil on a personal level. He regrets the breakup of his marriage and how badly he’s let his relationship with his now-adult daughter languish as he’s tried to redeem past actions by service to others. When he’s sent to Italy and needs a translator he can trust, he has the opportunity to reach out to her and reruit her for the mission. But when they find themselves in harm’s way, is it too late for them to continue to rebuild trust? And is there time for Haggs to put his trust in the Christ Caleb has always talked to him about?
The story doesn’t give a specific date (it opens in “present day” Heraklion, Crete), but it’s set in a not-too-distant future. Given how world events are unfolding these days, with wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and more, it isn’t hard to draw parallels between this story and life right now. If you’re a Christ-follower, you may find yourself wondering if now is the time, if this is the “beginning of the birth pangs” referred to in Mark 13:8. If you aren’t, you might find yourself wondering if perhaps this Christianity thing might merit a closer look. I’m no Bible scholar, but current events aren’t like anything I’ve seen in my lifetime. Makes you wonder.
Jeremiah and O’Neal paint a fascinating picture of what it might look like when the Rapture takes place and how people might respond. Some people search fruitlessly for their missing loved ones. Some people freak out, maybe harming themselves or others. Some just pick up the pieces and carry on. Haggs finds himself trying to carry on, trying to get back to his ex-wife and daughter to make sure they’re okay, and starts to question whether he should have given more thought to the things Caleb had shared with him. And the story ends on a cliffhanger that begs for a sequel.
This is unapologetically Christian fiction. It is upfront about belief in Christ, the End Times, and what will happen before Christ’s return. It makes you think how that might really play out, and the thought of realizing people you know – a friend, a spouse, a parent, a child – could be gone in the blink of an eye, leaving you wondering what happened? That makes me a little queasy to consider. I hope fellow believers find strength and encouragement in the story, and I hope those who do not yet believe find some things to chew on and roll around in their minds.
I enjoyed Vanished, and I’m looking forward to the next in the series.
