We nerd out about deep dives into Scripture at our house. We like to dig into context, word meanings, all that good stuff. So Verse by Verse, a devotional that literally takes you through each verse of the Bible, really caught my attention!
This book covers Genesis, chapters 1 through 11. It’s a pretty hefty book, which makes sense given that there are about 333 verses just in those chapters. It opens with A Practical Guide to Your Reflections, in which Benjamin McGreevy offers a step-by-step process the reader can follow for each verse. He makes it clear that this is not meant to be a “skim it quick and check Bible reading off my to-do list” kind of read. Rather, it is intended to invite the reader into “a personal journey with God through His Word.” McGreevy emphasizes the importance of taking time to reflect or meditate on God’s Word, and indeed, says that the space provided for reflection throughout is the most important part of the book.
Each chapter is divided into sections for individual verses, and each section opens with the verse itself. McGreevy then does some serious analysis of the verse’s meaning. He has clearly done a great deal of research, and that research informs his analysis.
I would imagine this will be a lifelong labor of love for McGreevy, and at my age, I may not have enough years left to read the entirety of his work (or even see it all published!). I haven’t even finished this book yet. With 333 verses, it will take me the better part of a year to work through chapters 1 through 11 of Genesis. So this is unlikely to replace my daily devotional. Rather, I’ll use it as a supplement. I may read a verse each day, or I may use it to go into more detail on a verse in my daily reading that really catches my attention. However I use it, I think it will be a wealth of scriptural information and enlightenment, and I look forward to reading more of it.
If you’re used to, say, short daily devotionals that take a minute or two or three to read through, this will be a new experience for you! But if you’re ready to really get to some spiritual meat in your Bible reading, I think you’ll like Verse by Verse.
