Word of the Week: a bookish meme hosted here on Mondays in which we share a word that we find entertaining, enlightening, edifying, or just plain fun to say! Share your own word on your blog, then help me grow the meme and come share it here on mine!

This week’s word might make you think of a hearty breakfast. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with breakfast at all!

Did that make anyone else think of Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup and a stack of pancakes? No? Just me? Carry on, then.
According to Haggard Hawks, “butterworths” are those flailing hand gestures you make when you can’t remember what you wanted to say. They’re named after a British linguistics professor who researched why we may make those gestures when we forget where our train of thought was headed. Read more about it here. Fascinating stuff!
Have you ever used this word (other than in a breakfast food context)? Did you know it before you saw it here?
