Word of the Week: July 31, 2023

Word of the Week: a bookish meme hosted here on Mondays in which we share a word that we find entertaining, enlightening, edifying, or just plain fun to say! Share your own word on your blog, then help me grow the meme and come share it here on mine!

If you’re a fan of mathematical notation and words that simply aren’t used anymore, today’s word is for you!

I had never heard of this word before I saw it on Tara Lazar’s list of 500+ cool and interesting words. So of course I had to go look it up!

According to World Wide Words, this word fell into disuse some time ago. It’s “one of those weird words which is best known for being held up as an example of a weird word.” (I can see why.) The site does go into some depth as to its etymology, though. I don’t see this one coming back into everyday use. It’s too long to be useful even as a Scrabble winner if you land on triple word score. (Would it even fit on the board?)

Anyway, there’s your dose of random word-nerdy fun for the day! If you find a way to throw this one out in conversation, please come back and let me know.

Leave a comment, and link your own word up in the linky below. Then share the meme to help it grow!
