Word of the Week: March 3, 2025

Word of the Week: a bookish meme hosted here on Mondays in which we share a word that we find entertaining, enlightening, edifying, or just plain fun to say! Share your own word on your blog, then help me grow the meme and come share it here on mine!

For this, our last word of Carnival season, I’m highlighting a well-known krewe that offers some really amazing throws. Just be sure to catch them with your hands and not your head.

Zulu is one of the better-known Mardi Gras krewes. It’s a historically African American krewe and it began in the early 1900s as a benevolent aid society. Learn more about the krewe here.

I’ve mentioned throws before, the things that float riders toss to parade watchers. Some krewes really get fancy with their throws. Muses has its lavishly decorated, custom-made shoes. Iris has its beautifully adorned sunglasses. Nyx has its purses.

And Zulu? Zulu has coconuts. Gloriously, outrageously decorated coconuts. Take a look at just one of the artisans who creates them.

Had you ever heard of the Krewe of Zulu and their marvelously decorated coconuts? If you could have any fancy Mardi Gras throw you wanted, which would you choose?

Got a word? Share it below! Then share the meme to help it grow!
