Book Beginnings on Friday and Book Blogger Hop: April 14, 2023

Book Beginnings on Fridays is hosted each week by Rose City Reader. It’s a chance to share the first sentence or so of the book you are reading this week. You can check out others’ book beginnings here. I’m also going to link up with Carrie at Reading Is My Superpower for First Line Friday.

This week’s book beginning:

Synopsis:

From the early 1940s, The Gold Rose, a secret rescue agency with Asian origins, has used a unique system to ferret out and save victims in every corner of the world. Charlotte Hunt-Basse, an agent with The Gold Rose, must face numerous challenges to save the lives of two of her assignments-Pinkie and Babe.

Two-year-old Pinkie, discovered abandoned on a dirt road during a violent storm, is whisked off to Mexico by oil-heir Clint Sutton and his girlfriend, Angelina. Years later, Pinkie is stolen away to Argentina by an aging Romani. In a bizarre twist, a rogue agent of The Gold Rose returns Pinkie to America, only to sell her to a woman in Los Angeles. When the agency locates Pinkie again, Charlotte must throw all caution to the wind to rescue her.

Babe, the child of Texas missionaries, is hidden by two Chinese families during the Japanese invasion and ensuing Communist takeover in China. She is forced by the second family to live incognito as a “boy” for several years. Martial arts are banned, but the grandfather teaches Babe Yŏng Chūn in deepest secrecy. The civil war escalates, and Babe finds herself on a dangerous quest for survival as she journeys alone through enemy territory toward the faintest hope of rescue.

SECRETS, SURVIVAL, AND TRAGEDY!

Award-winning Author Jodi Lea Stewart delivers another thrilling must-read novel.

Shadowy impressions are all I have of my two years of life before my new mama found me on a dirt road in Texas.

What do you think of that first line? Would you keep reading?

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. It starts each Friday and runs through the following Thursday. Each week, there’s a new prompt featuring a book-related question. It’s designed to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, make new blogging friends, and gain followers. See what others have to say on this topic and link up your own post here.

What is your go-to website to check out book reviews?
(submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver’s Reviews)

I usually check Goodreads and Amazon for reviews, and I occasionally remember to check Bookbub. Goodreads is my first choice.

Where do you look for reviews?

Happy Friday, y’all!

I read reviews on other blogs. There have been some books that grab my interest because of a review on a blog.
